One of the key markers of social disconnection is the sharp decline in the number of Americans who are part of a religious community or congregation of some kind. In the past, faith communities were especially important in bridging class divides in America. The decline in religious participation has been linked to higher levels of mental health issues. What role does religious or spiritual life play in community and belonging? How should faith leaders be thinking about the role of spiritual life and community in rebuilding a sense of belonging in our society–and how should researchers, public health officials, and civic leaders be thinking about ways to renew religious life in America?
